STUTTGART, Germany – Students in Ms. Lee’s 2nd grade class from Robinson Barracks Elementary School recently had the opportunity to take an exciting and educational field trip to the commissary. During their visit, they explored behind-the-scenes areas that are not normally seen by shoppers. Students learned how goods are received, stored, stocked, and prepared for the shelves. They observed large equipment used to move and organize products and learned about the different sections found at the front of the commissary. This experience helped students better understand how a grocery store operates and the many steps required to keep it running smoothly.

Following the tour, students participated in a hands-on math and life‑skills activity. Each student used a notebook containing a shopping budget list and was given an imaginary budget of $10. Their task was to plan and “window shop” for a complete lunch while staying within their budget. Students were required to include all essential food groups, such as protein, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and a drink, focusing on needs first.

After selecting their lunch items, students examined whether they had any remaining money. If so, they were allowed to look for “wants” they could afford. Throughout the activity, students practiced rounding prices to the nearest dollar, as well as adding and subtracting to keep track of their spending.

This interactive experience combined real‑world learning with math, nutrition, and financial responsibility. Students were engaged, thoughtful, and excited to apply their skills in a meaningful way, making the commissary visit both fun and educational.
