Read Across America Check In
Hooked on Books Assembly
On March 2, teachers performed scenes from favorite children's books during the Hooked on Books assembly to kick off Read Across America Month.
D.E.A.R. Week at RBES
This week RBES students participated in D.E.A.R. – Drop Everything and Read! Throughout the week, surprise announcements invited students to pause what they were doing, grab a book, and enjoy a few minutes of reading.
Each day included a fun twist. Some examples included a mountain climber reading on a desk and “Read Like a Boss” with feet up on desks. The PTSA also took Fri-YAY seriously by providing each student with a mini flashlight, and students read under their desks like cavemen in a cozy reading cave.
Ask your Bulldog: What was their favorite D.E.A.R. reading moment this week?

Virtual Author Visit
Today, Friday, March 13, RBES students enjoyed a virtual visit with Jerry Pallotta, author of the popular Who Would Win? series. Pallotta has written many children’s books about animals and nature, including favorites like The Icky Bug Alphabet Book and The Ocean Alphabet Book.
During the visit, students learned about his family, hobbies, and how he comes up with ideas for his books. Pallotta shared that inspiration can come from anywhere in everyday life—something sparks his curiosity and he asks himself, “If I were a seven-year-old, would this interest me?”
He also reminded students that not every idea becomes a book. Once he sent an idea to his publisher at Scholastic and asked, “Do you want this?” They said no, so he didn’t write that book! It was a great reminder that even authors hear “no” sometimes and shouldn’t get discouraged.
It was a fun way to celebrate Read Across America Month and connect with an author whose books many of our students enjoy.
Did You Know?
Jerry Pallotta didn’t start writing books until he was 32 years old. At 72 years old, that means he has been writing for 40 years! His first book was The Ocean Alphabet Book, and he has now written over 120 children’s books about animals, insects, oceans, and the alphabet. Before becoming an author, he even worked on a lobster boat!

How many Who Would Win? books have you read, and which animal matchup is your favorite?
